The Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) is endemic to Australia, living on sandy beaches along the coast of Southern Australia, including in Tasmania. They are not abundant.
Hooded plovers make an open nest in the sand and are threatened by disturbance from recreational beach users and unrestrained dogs, especially during the breeding season.
Their status is critically endangered in New South Wales, endangered in Victoria and vulnerable in South Australia.
