The Great Egret (Ardea alba) occurs throughout most of Australia, including Tasmania.
Great Egrets usually feed alone, hunting in shallow water or standing motionless before stabbing at prey. They feed mainly on fish, but molluscs, amphibians, aquatic insects, small reptiles and crustaceans are occasionally taken.
