Australian Magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen) are medium-sized black and white birds, but the patterns of their plumage varies across Australia and between males and females. Male magpies in south-eastern Tasmania have white backs; the backs of females and juveniles are flecked with grey. Adult birds have chestnut brown eyes.
Magpies are common and live in territories that are actively defended by all group members. They mainly feed on insects, but willing accept food from humans.
